Waterproofing a Basement with Iron Bacteria Issues

Waterproofing a basement is already a detailed process. When iron bacteria is involved, it becomes even more complex.

Traditional basement drainage systems are typically installed beneath the concrete floor slab and sealed permanently in place. They’re designed to channel groundwater toward a sump pump, but they’re not built to deal with thick, sticky iron ochre. Over time, that slime can clog small drainage openings and fill the pipes. Because the system is buried under concrete, cleaning it is difficult and sometimes impossible without major disruption.

At Ridgeback Basement Systems, we’ve seen firsthand how quickly iron bacteria can overwhelm a standard drainage setup. That’s why we install systems specifically engineered for homes dealing with iron ochre.

The WaterGuard® IOS (Iron Ochre System) is designed differently from conventional drains. Instead of being permanently hidden and inaccessible, it features a removable, flush-mounted cover that allows direct access to the drainage channel. This means a technician can periodically clean or flush the system to remove iron buildup before it causes failure.

The system is also designed with larger side drainage ports, helping reduce the risk of clogging from iron-ochre-laden groundwater. Our sump pump systems are built to handle solids up to half an inch in diameter, making them far more resilient in challenging conditions.

Maintenance needs vary from home to home. Some properties with mild iron bacteria issues may only require occasional servicing, while others with heavier concentrations may need more frequent cleaning. The key difference is that the system is designed to be maintained.

For homeowners in Halifax, Dartmouth, Moncton, Fredericton, Charlottetown, Truro, Sydney, and surrounding communities, having a waterproofing solution that accounts for iron bacteria can make the difference between a dry basement and a recurring problem.
